New vehicle registration plates 2022
Number plates in the UK are issued twice a year and are in a format that includes 2 numerical characters that show the year of registration, e.g AB02CDE, vehicle registered March 2002.
As of the 1st March 2022, all newly registered vehicles will be given a 22 tag, with vehicles registered 1st September 2022 given a 72 tag as their ‘age defying’ numbers.
In addition, to incorporate pervious changes made in 2021, number plates will be “BS AU 145e” standard plates to meet the new British Standard or Retroreflective Number Plates.
These plates are made of tougher, abrasion and damage resistant material and should only display solid black lettering, as plates that used different shades to create a 3D or 4D effect are banned. Perspex or acrylic lettering can still be used as long as the plate meets all requirements.
With solid black lettering, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are able to read the number plate more easily and new number plates will need to include the supplier’s business name and postcode, along with the name of the number plate manufacturer and the new standard.
